Hodja had his money stolen. He was quite upset and prayed often to find it. In the mean time, the ship one of the wealthy residents of Akşehir was sailing was caught in a storm. The man was so scared that he promised himself to give two-hundred akçes to Hodja if he got safely back home.

He survived the storm, and when he returned home he gave two hundred akçes to Hodja as he had promised. Of course, Hodja was thrilled. He thought for a few minutes and then said,
"My Lord, such coincidences! You sure work in mysterious ways."

When they asked Hodja to show where his nose is, he pointed at the back of his neck.

"But you are pointing at the wrong side," they said.

"If you don't know the wrong, you can never tell the right," Hodja replied.

His neighbour asked Hodja,
"Do you have some forty-year old vinegar?"
"I have," answered Hodja.

"Would you give me some? I need it to prepare a medication," said the man.

"No, I won't," replied Hodja.
"If I had given some to everybody who asked for it, would I have it for forty years."

When Hodja was with Tamerlane, they brought in a drunk soldier and asked Tamerlane how to punish him.
"Give him three-hundred whips," Tamerlane ordered.
Hodja started laughing.
"Why are you laughing?" asked Tamerlane. "Are you making fun of me? You should be ashamed of yourself!"
"I am laughin because either you have never been whipped or you don't know how to count," Hodja replied.
